Wally Kennedy: Want to Run a Restaurant? Here's an Opportunity

Want to try your hand at running a restaurant with a successful pedigree? Here's an opportunity that's just waiting for the right person to come along.

Pizza Ranch wants to expand into the Joplin market and is in need of a qualified franchisee to do it.

"We would love to be in Joplin,'' said Marilyn Mayberry, director of franchise development at Pizza Ranch. "Joplin would find that Pizza Ranch is a place for the entire family.''

Not long ago, Pizza Ranch acquired some property southeast of the intersection at 15th Street and Range Line Road. The property is east of Panda Express. Instead of immediately developing that property, the company committed to further development in Omaha, Nebraska, and Kansas City. The developer of a Pizza Ranch in Joplin would not be tied to that piece of property, Mayberry said.

A franchisee could own the real estate for new construction or retool an existing property. New construction would take 20 to 24 months. A retooling could take 12 to 18 months.

The restaurant would employ about 85 people in part-time and full-time jobs at the start.

So, what do you do if you are interested in this franchise? Visit the company's website at and look for the franchise section. The candidate will file an application that begins the vetting process. You can also call 1-800-321- 3401 and ask for the franchise department.

"This is when we get to know each other and whether this is a good fit for both the candidate and Pizza Ranch,'' Mayberry said. "Then we have a discovery day in which the candidate visits our restaurant support center to see the support they will get when they become a franchisee. The franchisee will have the support of a franchise system that's been around for more than 30 years.''

Pizza Ranch has a pizza buffet, a chicken buffet, a salad buffet and a dessert buffet. A chicken buffet? Yeah, apparently Pizza Ranch has staked a claim to the best broasted chicken in the country. This is what helps make a Pizza Ranch a place for the entire family, and that might be a big factor in the success of Pizza Ranch.

When it was announced that Pizza Ranch had acquired property in Joplin, the emails started coming and they haven't stopped. The most frequent question: When will we get our Pizza Ranch? What that suggests is that Pizza Ranch might already have a loyal guest following in Joplin.

Pizza Ranch has nearly 200 locations across the Midwest and Great Plains.
